Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was absent from his club Manchester United’s training today for “family reasons”, just days after press reports indicated he wanted to leave the “Red Devils”.
The intention was to meet the United players who were in the international window with their teams today with the rest of the team.
But according to British media reports, Ronaldo was not present at the training session, with the club agreeing to the reasons for his absence.
However, the 37-year-old’s absence will be interpreted as part of his bid to secure a departure from Old Trafford.
Ronaldo returned from Juventus to Manchester United last summer, but despite his success in becoming the English club’s first goalscorer last season and third goalscorer in the Premier League (18 goals), the “Red Devils” were content to occupy of sixth place.
United also failed to secure a place in the Champions League for the new season and came out of a title empty-handed, leaving CR7, the five-time Golden Ball winner for the best player in the world, whose contract with yet a year is extended, in addition to an optional year, facing the opportunity to play in the European League (Europa League) for the first time in his career.
United, for their part, insist that their Portuguese star, who scored 24 goals in all competitions last season, is reportedly not for sale, while new Dutch coach Eric ten Hag is keen to work with him.
Ronaldo won the English Premier League title three times and the Champions League once during his first spell at United for six years, before moving to Real Madrid in 2009 and then to Juventus in 2018.
Ronaldo’s absence from training comes as United prepare to travel to Asia and Australia on Friday for his pre-season tour.
