Ryan Gosling Gets Recognition In First Look At Bleached Blonde Barbie Transformation

Someone once said to Ryan Gosling, “Seriously? It’s like being Photoshopped,” which seems to be the direct inspiration for his role as Ken in the upcoming Barbie movie.

In the actor’s forward look in director Greta Gerwig’s live-action version of the iconic Mattel figure, Ryan embodies the plastic hunk in all his glory.

Sporting bleached blonder than blond hair, presumably buckets of spray tan lotion and his own personalized “Ken” underwear, the star leans into fantasy in an image shared Wednesday by Warner Bros.

In the photo, Ryan kindly poses against a signature Barbie pink backdrop with his muscles breaking out of a denim ensemble, which includes a ripped vest and matching jeans.

The photo perfectly complements the first look at Margot Robbie as the titular doll released in April.

When placed side by side, the famous couple could even look at each other given the similar color palettes and coordinating outfits. However, Margot, who is pictured in the seat of a pink Chevrolet Corvette convertible, looks a little more 60s-inspired, while Ryan could be lifted straight out of a Marky Mark-style underwear campaign from the 90s.

In addition to Margot and Ryan, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae and Hari Nef will star in the film. Written by Gerwig and partner Noah Baumbach, Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.

Details about the film’s plot remain scarce, but according to New York Times reporter Kyle Buchananthe project will feature multiple versions of Barbie and Ken.

Last month, Liu teased what fans would expect from the script, which one agent described as “one of the best” he’d ever read.

“He literally said this,” the star of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” told GQ. “He said, ‘If I could bet my career on one script, it would be the Barbie script. I really think you should do it.’”

Robbie has also provided some hints on how the film approaches the character. In 2020, the actor and producer noted that she feels a responsibility to do justice to Barbie’s legacy and undermine public expectations around her casting.

“People immediately have a sense of, ‘Oh, Margot plays Barbie, I know what that is.’” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “But our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you think, we’re going to give you something completely different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’”

Ryan, meanwhile, will be seen in Netflix’s mega-expensive action thriller The Gray Man opposite Chris Evans, which would certainly fill Ken’s cropped denim vest very nicely in another universe.
