Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 problems and how to fix them

Samsung has made its foldables better and more durable with each generation. Foldables are now also more affordable, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in particular, priced like any other 2021 flagship. Like any other smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 isn’t without its problems. Here’s a rundown of some common Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 issues and possible solutions to fix them.

Problem #1: Show fold/tear along the fold

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is quite durable. It survived more than 400,000 folds in an intensive durability test and we found the phone to be well built in our review. Unfortunately, not everyone shares the same experience. Many owners of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 have complained that the phone’s screen is cracked or creased along the fold.

Possible solutions:

  • If you see a crack in the screen along the fold, the only option is to have the screen repaired. If the screen cracks, you will see a gray bar across the fold and black spots may appear on the screen. It’s easier if the phone is in the warranty period and you have Samsung Care Plus. However, there are quite a few users who have said that Samsung has rejected their warranty claim and said that the crack was caused by physical damage to the phone by the user.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip 3 screen wrinkle problem is easier to fix. The screen protector causes the wrinkling or bubbling along the crease. It is best if you take the phone to an authorized service center anyway to replace the screen protector. More daring users have removed and replaced the screen protector, but remember that this will void your warranty.

Problem #2: Phantom Notifications and Ghost Vibrations

A few Z Flip 3 owners say the phone randomly vibrates (when turned off) or gives notification alerts even though they haven’t received any new notifications. Some also see the orange notification dot on the cover screen, but don’t see anything new.

Possible solutions:

  • This could be a problem with the Notification Reminder institution. It’s an accessibility setting that sends alerts every five minutes until a notification is checked or rejected. The feature may have a bug and may send unnecessary warnings. Until there is a software fix, the best option is to disable it. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Advanced Settings > Notification Reminders and disable it (disable).
  • You can see which apps have sent notifications by going to Settings > Notifications† Check if there are any apps showing that they send notifications but you don’t see them on the cover screen.
  • Check if the issue still persists in safe mode. If not then a rogue app could be causing the problem. Uninstall any recently installed or updated apps and see if the problem goes away.

Problem #3: “Control Panel Not Working” Error

Some users get the “Control Panel not working” error when they try to use apps in Flex Mode that allow you to use the phone when it is at a right angle.

Possible solutions:

  • The error appears when an app does not work properly with Flex Mode. You can check which apps are enabled by going to . to go Settings > Advanced Features > Labs > Flex Mode Panel and removing the apps from the list that are causing the problem.

Problem #4: “Subject: No subject” appears in MMS/group text headers

The header error has affected several Samsung phones especially if you are on the T-Mobile network. It seems to come and go with updates to the Samsung Messages app.

Possible solutions:

  • The problem occurs when the Samsung Messages app automatically adds the line in MMS or group text messages. You won’t see this issue with other messaging apps so you can switch to Google Messages or other third party apps in Google Play Store. The only option is to wait for a software update.

Problem #5: Freezing and Restarting

Some users say that the phone tends to freeze and reboot automatically. It usually happens when the device overheats even with regular use.

Possible solutions:

  • If your Z Flip 3 freezes and restarts automatically without the phone overheating, a rogue app is likely the culprit. Boot the phone in safe mode and see if the problem persists. If not, uninstall any recently installed or updated apps and see if the problem goes away.
  • Try wiping the cache partition to see if the problem goes away.
  • Only a software update can help with overheating of the device. Until then, make sure to close all background apps and take off the phone case if you plan on playing games or using the camera.

Problem #6: Android Auto issues

Like most smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is no stranger to Android Auto issues.

Possible solutions:

  • The most common cause of Android Auto problems is how the phone is set up. If you used Samsung’s Smart Switch app to set up your new phone, some settings may not transfer properly and cause problems on the new device. Find the app in the Google Play Store and uninstall it. It will not be completely removed as it is now a system app. Tap on Update and install it again. Go to Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage and tap Empty storage space and Clear cache
  • Some Galaxy Z Flip 3 owners say their Android Auto problems are due to an incompatible cable. Some cheap third-party cables only work for charging, but you need one that allows data transfer. The best option is to get the Samsung USB-A to USB-C cable or USB-C to USB-C cable. There are also a few third-party cables worth considering.

Issues for which there is no workaround and requiring a software update or replacement

There is no easy solution for some of the problems with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. If you encounter other issues, don’t forget to report the issue to Samsung. Open the Samsung Members app and go to Get help > Send feedback > Error reports.

  • “Tap to wake” doesn’t work on cover screen: A few users say that the tap-to-wake feature does not work as expected on the cover screen. You can check the phone’s always-on display settings and users say that a restart will fix the problem temporarily.
  • Microphone not working with some apps: Users find that the phone’s microphone doesn’t work with certain apps like WhatsApp. However, the microphone seems to work with the camera app and others. This could be a permission issue. Go to Settings > Apps > (find the app) > App permissions and make sure the problematic app has microphone permission active. However, the permission setting is not the issue for most users.
  • App icons are missing from the home screen: Many Samsung phone owners say that app icons are missing from the home page and app drawer. The apps are installed on the phone and can be accessed by opening and selecting the app page in the Google Play Store Open† This issue seems to affect all Samsung phone users using a third party launcher. Users say that returning to the phone’s default One UI launcher resolves the issue.
  • Clock app/alarms not working: AZ Flip 3 user says their phone only vibrates during an alarm instead of ringing. They can’t replicate the problem when testing the clock app by setting the alarm a few minutes later. This could be a battery saver issue. Make sure the phone’s clock app is not in the battery life optimized list.
  • Calls are not going through: Some users say that the phone does not seem to be able to make calls. Calls drop immediately when dialing another number, even though the phone indicates that the network is available. Some T-Mobile and Verizon users have complained about this issue.
  • Slow Wi-Fi Speeds on 5 Ghz Networks: Some Z Flip 3 owners say that data connection speeds on their phones seem slower than on other devices on the same network.

Note: You need to connect your phone to your PC first to get into the recovery menu to factory reset the device or wipe the cache partition.

Boot in safe mode

When the phone is off

  • Press and hold the side key until the Samsung logo appears on the screen.
  • Once Samsung appears and the device vibrates, release the side key and immediately press and hold the volume down button.
  • Wait for the phone to reboot.
  • Release the volume down button when you see Safe mode in the lower left corner of the screen.

When the phone is on

  • If you have set the side key to act as a power button, press and hold it until the power options appear. If the side key is set to Bixby, press and hold the side key and the volume down button.
  • Tap and hold the Switch off option until you see Safe mode.

Factory settings

  • Press and hold the volume up button and the side key.
  • Release the side key once the phone turns on but continue holding the volume up button.
  • Use the volume down button to navigate to: Clear data/factory reset and press the side key to confirm.
  • Select Yes delete all user data settings.
  • Once the reset is complete, press the side key to select Reboot system now

Clear cache partition

  • Press and hold the volume up button and the side key.
  • Release the side key once the phone turns on but continue holding the volume up button.
  • Use the volume down button to go to the Clear cache partition option and press the side key to confirm.
  • Restart the phone when you are done.
