British fighters Savannah Marshall and Richard Riakporhe are close to securing major title clashes.
Marshall is in negotiations for an undisputed middleweight title fight with her big rival, American star Claressa Shields.
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and multiweight champion, is one of the best fighters in women’s sport. But she never fought Marshall like a pro. The Brit, with an amateur win in 2012 over Shields, is the only boxer to have defeated the American. Both would enjoy renewing hostilities in their long-running feud.
BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom is nearing completion of the match between Marshall, the WBO 160lb titlist, and Shields, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBC weight belts, in the UK on air sports†
“It has not been announced yet. There is a lot of speculation about what is going on with that fight, we know it will be in the UK. A lot of people are speculating about when it will be,” Shalom said. Sky Sports News†
†[There’ll be a] big press conference in London that I’m looking forward to. It’s been a while. It’s been a lot longer for Savannah and Claressa than it has been for me. They’ve been waiting for this all their careers. The numbers, the anticipation of that, I think we’re going to see something that we haven’t seen before.”
After so impressively demolishing Fabio Turchi earlier this month, London cruiserweight Richard Riakporhe is on his way to a world title he shot himself. Promoter Shalom sees a fight with WBC cruiserweight belt holder Ilunga Makabu for Riakporhe later this year as well.
“Were very close [to a title fight]† Richard, that was his dream 12 months ago. He is now on the brink. He doesn’t care which one it is. I prefer the WBC Makabu route. I think that’s a perfect choice for Richard,” Shalom said.
“He [Riakporhe] looks good, he looks like he can take on anyone and he looks like he can take out anyone. I hope he will fight for a world title this year.”
