The Country Fire Service says a fire caused more than $1 million worth of damage to shops on Mount Compass, on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide.
A bakery, a butcher’s shop and a vacant store were destroyed when a fire broke out at the Victor Harbor Road shopping complex about 3:30 a.m.
Several other stores were damaged, along with a house.
More than 40 firefighters fought the blaze.
Some are expected to stay on site during the day to extinguish the hot spots.
The cause is still under investigation.
Victor Harbor Road has reopened after being closed previously.
