In a shooting in Houston, Texas, a 5-year-old was killed and an 8-year-old injured when the vehicle they were driving came under gunfire as it stopped at an intersection early Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Houston Police Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said officers received several calls before 1 a.m. about a shooting on the 13300 block of Northborough Drive.

They arrived on the scene but saw no witnesses, suspects or complainants, Hatcher said.

Further investigation revealed that a mother was driving her two children in the area and had stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when her vehicle came under gunfire.

The woman “immediately left the location when she realized her children had been shot and immediately took them to the hospital,” Hatcher said.

About 15 minutes after responding to the scene, police received additional calls about two children arriving at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds.

Hatcher said a 5-year-old was shot and died of the injuries, while an 8-year-old is also expected to make a full recovery.

“It is unclear whether the complainants were the intended target of the shooting or if something else was going on in the area at the time,” Hatcher said. “We have no motive. We have no suspicious descriptions, except possibly two black men in a dark-colored vehicle. We are here looking for surveillance footage and collecting evidence.”

Based on information from some witnesses, Hatcher said police believe a dark-colored vehicle, possibly with two occupants, was traveling west on Rush Street, while the complainant’s vehicle was traveling north in Northborough. The occupants of the vehicle traveling west began to unload a firearm or possibly several firearms.

The complainant’s vehicle was stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when it was hit by the gunshots, Hatcher said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Houston Police Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
