Over the years, the late Bert Newton became the unofficial face of the Logies, thanks to hosting the ceremony a whopping 19 times.
Of course he won the Gold Logie several times and won the highest gong four times.
After Newton’s death in 2021, it was revealed that he had given away one of his Gold Logies to a dying AIDS patient.
Showbiz reporter Peter Ford revealed that in the 1990s he had a friend who died of AIDS in a Melbourne hospital, with only a few weeks left to live. Ford sent letters to several celebrities on behalf of his friend asking them to sign and return a card.
“Five days later I went to the hospital and there was a buzz in the air. The person on the desk said, ‘You’re not going to believe it – Bert Newton was just here. He’s been to everyone in the AIDS ward, sitting at their bed, told their stories and made them laugh’.”
Newton even left one of his Logies as a gift.
