Video game companies (including Sony) support reproductive rights

Sony’s silence has ended.

A number of video game companies, including Sony, made statements today in support of reproductive rights.

These statements follow a decision by the United States Supreme Court to reverse Roe v Waderemoving a national precedent for the right to abortion.

Since the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision, several US states have taken swift action to make abortions illegal. Several other states, such as California, have declared themselves safe havens for people in need of procedure.

Statements from developers at PlayStation Studios, including Insomniac and Sony Santa Monica, are noteworthy because Sony has muted them in the past.

Developer statements can be found below. We will update this post as more statements are published.

IGEA’s statement: “The International Game Developers Association supports and empowers game developers around the world to achieve fulfilling and sustainable careers. We believe that bodily autonomy and choice about one’s own reproductive and health care issues are relevant to achieving this mission. One must be in control of their own health issues in order to successfully manage their career and life.

“As a global organization, we understand that not all individuals experience or have access to freedoms and liberties related to bodily autonomy, and we oppose any attempt to weaken existing freedoms. We are deeply concerned about increasing government interventions that undermine and limit reproductive choice and access to care. We applaud and show solidarity with the gaming industry and community leaders who are taking action to support all those negatively affected by these efforts.”
