Neil Warnock has revealed he had the chance to sign Virgil van Dijk for just £5million when he was manager of Crystal Palace, but was told by his chief scout that the Dutchman was ‘too slow’.

This came during Warnock’s second stint with the Eagles in 2014, when Van Dijk impressed for Celtic in Scotland.

The veteran boss had the chance to move the commanding centre-back south of the border, but opted against it on the advice of his scout, which turned out to be rather bad.

Van Dijk moved to Southampton in 2015 for £13million and then to Liverpool in January 2018 for £75million, where he has become one of the world’s best players, so Palace is really wrong.

‘The one who got away from me was’ Virgil van Dijk,” Warnock told Mirror Football. “I was offered it when I was at Crystal Palace for £5million.

“But my chief scout said he was too slow and ended up in Southampton instead! It’s a shame because anything he lacks in pace he makes up for tenfold in his ability to read the game.”

Van Dijk won the Premier League and Champions League with the Reds, adding an FA Cup and League Cup win this season that he will remember fondly.

He tweeted earlier this month: “My season is over. A season with heavy moments, but above all full of happy moments. Glad I was able to contribute again after being out for so long. I am blessed and privileged and I really don’t take that for granted!

“I will keep improving and getting better, but now it’s time to rest and shut down completely. Thanks to my teammates, the staff and fans at LFC and Orange, and I’ll see you next season.”
