War in Ukraine shows that ‘powerful countries are willing to go to war’

Hugh White, professor emeritus of strategic studies at the Australian National University, discusses his Quarterly Essay, Sleepwalk to War, which examines the potential conflict between China and America.

“I think the tragedy in Ukraine has shown us that powerful countries are willing to go to war to assert their image of themselves as superpowers,” he told Sky News Australia.

“And I think the risks in Asia are great… and the consequences could be worse.”
