Western Australia announces direct European flight route

SYDNEY, June 21 (Xinhua) — The government of the state of Western Australia (WA) this week is preparing the first-ever non-stop service between Australia and continental Europe, hoping the connection will open up new avenues for tourism.

The non-stop flight between Perth and Rome is expected to last just over 16 hours and will begin with a test flight on Wednesday before official services begin Saturday, which will take place three times a week between June and October.

WA Prime Minister Mark McGowan will see the inaugural flight on Saturday, which has received funding through the state’s Reconnect WA package, which has allocated $195 million (about $136 million) to help the state’s COVID-19-ravaged tourism industry. to reboot .

“The direct connection between Perth and Rome will create many new opportunities between Western Australia and continental Europe, including a huge boost to our tourism industry that will further diversify the economy and support jobs, investment and business opportunities,” McGowan said Tuesday.

The seasonal route is expected to attract more than 3,700 additional visitors to Perth over the next two years and generate approximately $7.7 million (about $5.4 million) for the local economy.

Before the pandemic, WA would see nearly 150,000 visitors from Continental Europe each year, but the state’s strict border closures halted international tourism.

Since opening its borders in early March, the state has made an effort to revitalize its tourism industry – the main economic engine generated 11 billion Australian dollars (about 7.7 billion US dollars) and supported more than 100,000 local jobs in 2019 .

WA Tourism Secretary Roger Cook hoped the new link would let the world know that “Western Australia is truly open for business and open to tourism.”

“Continental Europe is a key tourism market for Western Australia… The launch reaffirms Perth as the western gateway to our country and is an important new link to improve international access to the state,” said Cook.
